Not a real entry today, just a quick note that I'm going out of town for several days, and probably won't be back on line until next Wednesday.

And I'm tickled to discover that Brighid and I share a birthday. (Hey, Brighid, if it makes you feel any younger, you were born the year I graduated from high school <g>.) We also share the day with Peter O'Toole and James Baldwin, an insanely pointless factoid that's given me irrational pleasure over the years.

I am not someone who makes a big deal of birthdays (understatement) but P. is and does, and so I got the showered-with-presents thing, and the dinner-at-a-nice-restaurant thing, all of which was enjoyable. Exquisite food, marvelous Zinfandel, cool swag. Now I must throw things in a suitcase and hit the road.

"I'd learned on the highway and in the circus, in the army, and at boxing gyms that even if you have a cutman in your corner to stanch the blood, it doesn't obviate the need for stamina, self-reliance, and keeping oriented to what I think of as the earth's magnetic field. You can have allies, mentors, be married, but still you're going to be alone most of your life, and if you're going to run off the rails, you had better be good company for yourself."
