Ray K FAQ

Personal:
  1. ·It's spelled Kowalski.
  2. ·“I go by Ray.” (Eclipse) (His father also calls him Raymond, as does Sam Franklin (TLM), who has known him for more than eight years; so does Stella, who has known Ray since he was thirteen.) Canonically no one calls him “Stan.” Vecchio calls him “Stanley” once (CotW); his mother calls him “Stanley” (EM); Fraser refers to him as “Stanley Raymond Kowalski,” in CotW but in the line immediately following that, calls him “Ray” again.

  4. ·Ray's father is Damian (with two “a's”, according to the official site) and his mother is Barbara.
  5. ·Ray had a falling out with his father over joining the police force. This seems to have been put aside later. (EM)
  6. ·Ray's brother is referred to on the official due South web site but never appeared on the show.

(Eclipse) This certainly implies, if seasons 3 and 4 took place in 1997 or 1998, that Ray was certainly on the police force longer than the figure of eight years that is given in TLM. His second citation was 1990; his third, 1995.

  23. ·Ray did attend college but dropped out to go to the Academy. (EM, SvS)
  24. ·(more timeline inferences: Ray is approximately 36 in seasons 3 and 4; if he went to college until he was, say, 21, and then dropped out – having, thus, enough credit hours to enter the Academy – he would seem to have been on the force for 13 – 14 years at the time seasons 3 and 4 take place.

Also note that in Asylum, Jack Huey and Tom Dewey are having a discussion in a car parked outside of the Canadian Consulate, wherein Huey mentions that Kowalski eats a lot of pizza. The two wonder aloud how he keeps his figure.

  24. ·Due South had 3 American seasons and 4 Canadian seasons. It was produced in conjunction with CBS for the first two seasons, which starred Paul Gross and David Marciano. When it was decided to take the show into independent production after CBS dropped it, David Marciano bowed out (reportedly he was unhappy with Toronto and with his role) and was replaced with Callum Keith Rennie for the independent production seasons. These were made in accordance with Canadian standards, 13 episodes per season, so in Canada due South was produced as a 3rd and 4th season, 26 hours in all. MotB marked the end of the 3rd season; CotW, the end of the 4th. This is why fans talk about seasons 3/4 as opposed to season 3 or season 4.
  25. ·The show's explanation for the replacement of Ray Vecchio with Ray Kowalski was that Ray Vecchio was sent deep undercover because of his amazing resemblance to “The Bookman,” Armando Langoustini, a Mob hit man. Ray Kowalski was brought in to answer to the name of “Ray Vecchio” to make it appear that there was still a Ray Vecchio at the 27th. He was never intended to 'replace' Ray Vecchio; he was intended to provide a cover to ensure Ray Vecchio's safety while undercover with the Mob.
  26. ·Vecchio and Fraser spend a lot of time in a supply closet at the 27th in seasons 1 and 2.
  27. ·Ray K and Fraser never go into the closet in the 27th in seasons 3/4 . Welsh and Fraser go into the closet in Eclipse and Frannie goes into the closet with Fraser in Asylum.
